Recipe: Dal Makhani – Slow Cooked Creamy Indian Curry with Black Lentils and Sugar Beans

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Black Lentils (Urad Dal)
  • 1/2 cup Jasbro Foods Sugar Beans
  • 4 cups water for soaking
  • 4 cups water for cooking
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 3 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1 cup fresh cream or heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Soak the Black Lentils and Jasbro Foods Sugar Beans in water separately overnight or for at least 6 hours. Drain and rinse the lentils and beans before cooking.
  2. In a large pot, add the soaked lentils and beans along with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until the lentils and beans are soft and tender. Stir occasionally and add more water if needed.
  3. In a separate pan, heat ghee or vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then, add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Add the pureed tomatoes to the pan and cook until the oil separates and the mixture thickens.
  6. Now, add the garam masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix the spices well with the tomato-onion mixture, creating a rich and flavorful base.
  7. Transfer the cooked lentils and beans to the tomato-onion mixture, including any remaining cooking water. Mix everything together and let it simmer on low heat for an additional 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  8. Add fresh cream and butter to the pot, stirring them into the dal makhani for a creamy and luscious texture.
  9. Season with salt to taste, and adjust the spices if desired.
  10. Garnish the dal makhani with chopped fresh cilantro leaves, adding a burst of freshness to the dish.
  11. Serve the delightful Dal Makhani with steamed rice, naan, or roti, savoring the slow-cooked flavors of this classic Indian curry.

Enjoy the rich and creamy goodness of Dal Makhani made with Black Lentils and Jasbro Foods Sugar Beans, a true delight for your taste buds and a testament to the authenticity of Indian cuisine.
